Consumer Guide for ATVs

All-terrain-vehicles, or ATVs, can be split into two groups. Utility ATVs are designed to do work and pull loads, and sports ATVs are faster and designed for recreational use.

Utility ATVs

If you want an ATV for using around the farm or for hunting, a utility ATV is the best choice. These large, heavy, shaft-driven ATVs are specifically designed with low-range transmission, strong torque and tow hitch for pulling loads. They also have larger tires for better grip, more mud splatter protection than sports types and racks for easy carrying.

Sports ATVs

Chain-driven sports ATVs are lighter and faster than utility ATVs. The engine and transmission are designed for speed at higher gears and the suspension is more responsive to shocks from jumps than utility vehicles. The sports ATVs have few extras, such as racks and tow hitches, to reduce weight, and the plastic body does not offer much protection from mud splatter.

Engine and Size Requirements

ATV Connection recommends larger engine ATVs for people who need to be able to traverse dirt banks and dunes. They also recommend testing the ATV for ergonomic fit before buying, as tall people can get cramped on smaller machines.
