How to Stop IP Conflict

There are two methods to resolve an IP address conflict: renew and release and reconfigure static IP addresses. If neither of these works, there may be an issue with your router or dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) server.

Renew and Release

An IP conflict usually is caused when two computers on the same network are assigned the same IP address. If you're using DHCP, the simplest resolution to the conflict is to access the command prompt (find "cmd" on the start menu). On the command line, type "ipconfig/release" (without quotes), and when the prompt returns, type "ipconfig/renew" (without quotes).

Reconfigure Static IP

If there is still an IP conflict, go back to the command line and type "netsh" (without quotes), then type: "interface ip set address name="Local Area Connection" static 192.168.1** 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1" (no outside quotes). Instead of ** put the last two digits of the new IP address, which can be any two digits, but must be different from all others on your local network, otherwise you will get another IP conflict.

IP Conflict remains

If there is still an IP conflict, there may be a problem with your router or DHCP. Reset the router by unplugging it, waiting five minutes and plugging it back in. If the problem persists, you may need to update the firmware on your router.
