Yahoo! is best known for being a search engine.

Yahoo! is best known for its search engine and several other services it provides for the Internet. Most people know that, but many people do not know why it's called something as strange as Yahoo!

  1. History

    • In 1994, Stanford students David Filo and Jerry Yang started an Internet guide to keep track of websites they found interesting. Eventually, they were spending more time updating the list than on classwork. The list became unwieldy and was broken into categories, which were divided further into subcategories that continued to grow. From this came the core concept of Yahoo!

    The Name

    • It was not called Yahoo! at first. The original name was "Jerry And David's Guide to the World Wide Web." They changed the name because they liked the definition of yahoo in the dictionary, which defined a yahoo as a rude, unsophisticated, uncouth person.

    Fun Fact

    • Yahoo! is now an acronym for Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle. This was created after the fact, making it a backronym.
