GEDs offer advancement for students who did not graduate from high school.

The GED, or General Education Development, is a series of tests developed as an alternative to a high school diploma: ideal for those who dropped out of high school or otherwise could not graduate. Maryland offers both offline and online services for GED seekers.

  1. GED Testing

    • Maryland does not offer an online version of the GED test. In-person GED testing centers appear across the state, however, and the state offers an online GED preparation program for those seeking to take the test, as well as an online GED application for future test-takers.

    GED Format

    • In Maryland, the GED test exists only in pencil-and-paper format. A proctor must administer and oversee the GED test at an official testing facility for the test results to be considered valid.

    Online GED Resources

    • Maryland does offer GED-i, an online GED test preparation program available to eligible Maryland residents. Students enrolled in GED-i may work at their own pace to prepare for all five sections of the GED test. To enroll, students must be Maryland state residents, at least 16 or older and out of school. They must also complete a pre-test in math and reading at an Adult Education center to demonstrate minimum 9th grade math and reading skills.
