What is a HUD Grant?

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is a federal agency whose mission focuses on affordable housing and building strong communities. HUD awards grants to programs in line with its mission.

Identification

HUD periodically issues Notifications of Funding Availability (NOFAs). NOFAs list currently available grants, including the size of these grants, who is eligible to apply and the grant contract requirements. While HUD issues grants throughout the year, candidates must submit applications within the time frames listed in the program's information.

Types

HUD issues NOFAs for grants dealing with housing issues. Some of these grants include other services beyond shelter, however. For example, the Housing Counseling Grants assist potential home buyers with financial literacy and expanded home ownership possibilities. The Continuum of Care Grants seek to help homeless individuals and families with not only housing, but also education and employment opportunities to help them achieve financial independence.

Considerations

HUD grants help low-income and homeless citizens secure affordable housing. Eligibility to apply for grants is often limited to specific types of organizations, such as municipalities or 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. All HUD grants must be applied for online through Grants.gov, and pre-registration of the applicant organization is required.
