Flower Bulbs That Produce Red or Orange Flowers

Many flower bulbs produce red or orange flowers -- some more popular than others. These bulbs can grow into useful houseplants, as the red and orange flowers can draw the eye to them, making them a focal point indoors or out.

Amaryllis

Amaryllis is a popular flower bulb for forcing indoors during the holiday season. Amaryllis bulbs hail from South Africa and are hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zone 7B, according to the Clemson University Cooperative Extension. Grow them in full sun or a bright window, keep the soil moist and fertilize them only during active growth.

Crocosmia

Native to southern and tropical Africa, Crocosmia is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 10. Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is the most popular variety, according to Washington State University Clark County Extension. Grow it in full sun in moist, slightly acidic soil.

Tulip

Thousands of varieties of tulips exist, thanks in part to "tulip mania" in 1636 and 1637, according to Washington State University Clark County Extension. These bulbs are native to the Asia and Mediterranean region, but it was the Dutch who made the tulip so popular. The trick to getting tulips to naturalize is excellent drainage. Plant tulips in sandy soil and improve drainage by positioning the bulb on crushed stone.
