Buffalo is a slow-growing, low-maintenance, perennial grass native to North America. It makes an ideal ground cover if watering is consistent but not too heavy. Buffalo grass is tolerant to many conditions and climates.

Maintenance

While buffalo grass does not require fertilizer, a stringent irrigation regimen should be followed during the summer months. Provide 1 inch of water weekly to maintain its green color. It should be mowed at 2 to 3 inches when needed, recommends the Texas Cooperative Extension.

Growing Conditions

Buffalo grass grows best in clay and loam soils. It is tolerant of drought, extreme heat and high winds.

Types

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, there are four common types of buffalo grass: Stampede, 609, Prairie and Texoka.

Establishing Buffalo Grass

This hardy grass can be established from either sod plugs or pieces of sod smaller than 2 inches square, reports the website American-Lawns.com. Spring, summer and early fall are ideal seasons for planting buffalo grass.
