A hybrid vehicle leads the fuel economy ratings among Ford cars. The 2011 Ford Fusion hybrid provides 41 miles per gallon (MPG) in city driving and 36 on the highway, according to the government's fuel economy website. The gasoline-only version of the 2011 Focus offers 25 city and 35 highway MPG with a manual transmission. Another Ford car offering high fuel mileage is the 2011 Fiesta, with 29 city and 38 highway MPG when outfitted with an automatic transmission.

The 2011 Aveo boasts the best fuel mileage among Chevy cars, returning 27 MPG in city driving and 35 on the interstate with a manual transmission. The 2011 Cruze ranks second among Chevy cars, with 24 city and 36 highway MPG. The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu offers 22 city and 33 highway MPG. All three of these vehicles are non-hybrids.

The 2011 Buick cars offering the best fuel mileage are the Regal and the Regatta, each returning 19 city and 30 highway MPG, according to government ratings. The 2011 Lucerne comes in third among Buick cars, with 17 city MPG and 27 on the open road. Neither vehicle is a hybrid model.

Topping Chrysler's fuel mileage list is the four-cylinder version of the 2010 Sebring, which outputs 21 MPG in the city and 30 on the expressway. The company's 2010 PT Cruiser offers 19 city and 24 highway MPG, while the six-cylinder version of the Chrysler 300 produces 18 city and 26 highway MPG with a 2.7-liter engine. All these models are non-hybrids.

Does anyone besides me think these numbers are absolutely pathetic? Where is all the "advance of modern civilization" that's supposed to be happening? Having already mentioned "pathetic" I'll bring my 1972 Chevy Vega into the picture now. In my humble but most accurate opinion it was probably one of the biggest pieces of junk ever offloaded onto the American public. This was pre- EPA involvement yet mine still got about 32 mpg. Come on, 40 years of development and we are still stuck in the low 30mpg range? If I were an auto manufacturer I would hide my head in shame for simply falling in line with all the other "auto sheep" and settling for what everyone else is doing, whatever the reasons. 40 years @ 30 mpg------ that's a pathetic average.
