What Is a Fuse Tester?

A fuse tester is used to test the condition of a fuses used in electronic devices to protect from a power blowout. Fuses contain malleable metal that helps complete a circuit. If the power in the fuse rises to a dangerous level, the metal inside melts and the circuit's electronic flow halts.

Fuse Testers

Testing devices are small and have two opposing prongs and a measuring gauge. They are available on-line or at hardware and building supply stores as well as auto parts stores.

Test Procedure

Fuses to be tested are removed from their circuit and fitted to the two opposing prongs on the tester. A small current of electricity is run through the tester to insure the fuse is functioning correctly.

Readings

The fuse is functional if the gauge reads "0 ohm" or consistently stays in the same place. If the gauge points to the infinity symbol, the fuse is blown.
