Mascots can be silly entertainment during slow periods of a game.

Most every school has a mascot to represent its sports teams. Mascots are often animals with qualities we respect or fear, usually animals that are considered noble, fast and ferocious. In the case of the New England Patriots, the mascot is something that represents mankind.

  1. Pros

    • Mascots are generally a positive addition to a school team, and are often regarded as good luck. Costumed mascots get the crowd revved up and cheering for the team and sometimes perform dancing, stunts or gymnastics. When people are in disguise they feel less inhibited so a shy person becoming a school mascot can come out of his shell because he is supposed to jump around and be silly. Mascots can do the same for individuals in the crowd.

    Cons

    • The main negatives to mascots are the costs involved. Costumes can be expensive and they need to be cleaned. If a team has a live mascot, the animal has to be cared for, which can incur additional expenses for feeding and healthcare. Some schools also attempt to steal each other's mascots.

    • The first officially reported mascot was for Yale University and was a bulldog named "Handsome Dan." He was purchased for the team in 1889 for five dollars. There have since been 17 more "Handsome Dans."
