What Is an SSL Account? thumbnail
SSL offers security on the Web.

SSL stands for "Secure Sockets Layer." It is a system of encryption and authentication created by Netscape Communications Corporation as part of its of HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol, Secure). SSL has been superseded by the Transport Layer Protocol, although the name SSL is still in common usage.

  1. Function

    • SSL, as part of HTTPS is used to secure the transmission of data over the Internet. It is particularly popular with e-Commerce websites for the input of credit card details.

    Features

    • The security methods of SSL are based on encryption and certification. A certificate confirms the identity of the contacted server and encryption protects data from interference during transmission.

    SSL Accounts

    • SSL can be applied to any number of Web services. An example is email. A user may choose to have a regular email account or a security-enhanced version--an SSL account. This is one example of an application offering an SSL account.
