How Fast Do Pine Tree Needles Fall?

How Fast Do Pine Tree Needles Fall? thumbnail
Pines needles are held in clusters called fascicles.

About 115 different species of pine trees (Pinus spp.) exist, each with clusters of evergreen needles on their branches. Eventually, the oldest needles are shed to the ground and continually replaced with young needles. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Among the many species of pines, the number of needles produced varies. According to The Gymnosperm Database, needles are held in clusters of one to eight in a fascicle. These leaves are shed according to age; the oldest needles are shed before younger, healthier ones.

    Needle Shedding

    • Although exact timing, amount and rate of shedding varies according to pine tree species, needles drop in the largest numbers in fall as temperatures cool and the plants prepare for dormancy. Rather than retain the oldest leaves, they yellow anytime from late summer to mid-winter.

    Considerations

    • Pines may shed needles in cycles across the year, according to Kenneth Dale Albritton of the Suncoast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society. Environmental factors can cause needles to weaken, brown and be shed even before winter.
