A young redbud develops rapidly. Under optimum conditions, a new tree grows 1 to 2 feet in height in its early years. It reaches flowering stage in less than four years.

This tree's growth rate is enhanced by sufficient sunlight and well-drained soil. The young red bud needs sun to thrive, but, once established, the tree tolerates shade. Red buds are often used as street trees because of their soil tolerance.

Expect your redbud to top out between 20 and 30 feet tall. Since its growth slows a little after the tree reaches 10 feet, it will arrive at its full height in about 20 years. This is over half its life span, which is not beyond 35 years, according to the University of Arkansas.

Here is the scoop for anyone wanting to plant a redbud tree in the next few weeks! It is a great article. We have two going in Saturday from Suburban Lawn and Garden on 135th and Wornall?- I think. One is 3 1/2 inches in diameter and the other 3 inches. We didn't want to wait six or seven years for them to be noticeable. We had two holes dug for the root ball at 42 inches wide and 36 inches deep. We hope they live!
