    • Every cooking contest has its own specific criteria, but overall impression is a common place for the judging to start. While judges should not be swayed by personal taste, they can objectively discern if the food is well prepared, cooked properly and tasty.

    Uniqueness

    • Uniqueness is often the key to deciding the winner in a cooking contest. Many chefs can prepare a delicious hamburger or marinara sauce, but it takes talent to combine flavors in an original way. A unique or surprising dish usually fares better in a cooking contest than an equally tasty but more familiar creation.

    Other Factors

    • When organizing a cooking contest judges should come up with criteria that are specific to the type of food being evaluated. A salsa contest, for example, may include a category for the degree of spiciness; a contest focusing on budget may rate the chefs on the amount of money spent.
