Drivers should practice before towing a vehicle on the highway.

Many factors must be taken into consideration when towing an RV or trailer to ensure safety and to meet state regulations. Ford Fleet provides a guide that includes information related to each type of vehicle such as F-150, F-250 and F-350 pickup trucks.

Weight

Each type of vehicle has a combined maximum weight of the vehicle plus the RV or trailer, cargo and occupants based on the engine size of the tow vehicle. For example an F-150 pickup with a 5.4 liter, V8 engine can tow a maximum of 8,200 pounds.

Brakes

According to Ford, for weights of over 1,500 pounds, some states require an independent braking system on the towed vehicle.

Driving

Ford recommends that drivers practice with the tow vehicle prior to beginning a trip. Drivers should be comfortable with turning, acceleration and passing, braking, parking and backing up in a variety of conditions. For example, on a grade requires placing chocks under the wheels. In addition, drivers should be aware of the clearance height of the trailer or RV.

Safety

Periodically during a trip, the driver should inspect or check the trailer hitch, lights, engine oil and trailer lug nuts.
