Text to Speech Phonetics

Phonetics is the art of representing vocal sounds by signs and written characters. Voice recognition software makes use of phonetics to translate the spoken word into text, or to translate text into the spoken word.

  1. Function

    • The text to speech function is provided in speech recognition programs chiefly as a proofreading tool, enabling the user to listen to what the computer has interpreted. Each program contains a database of at least 150,000 words, enabling it to analyze words and covert them into text or speech. New words can be added to the database at any time.

    Training

    • Voice recognition software usually requires an initial training period, during which the user speaks into a computer's built-in microphone or a headset. This enables the program to familiarize itself with the user's voice patterns, ensuring more accurate translation.

    Features

    • Voice to text phonetics involves interpreting the human voice as a waveform, a mathematical representation of sound. According to the LumenVox Speech Engine website, speech recognition software programs analyze the characteristics of the sounds derived from the waveform and compare them with their own acoustic models.
