Make sure you file your taxes correctly every year.

A W-4 form must be filled out for every job you have that requires taxes be held by your employer. You don't have to fill out a new W-4 form each year unless certain aspects of your life change.

  1. Change of Address

    • If you change your address, you need to file a new W-4 form. The IRS needs to know where you live so tax returns and other tax related documents reach their destination promptly.

    Exempt Status

    • If you are claiming EXEMPT status on your W-4 form, you need to submit a new W-4 form each year. Your EXEMPT status expires on December 31 and a new form claiming EXEMPT status must be filed by February 15 if you wish to continue to claim EXEMPT.

    Other Changes

    • Other changes requiring a resubmission of a W-4 form include things such as marriage, divorce, claiming a new dependent and amending your tax return. However, minor alterations, such as changing your tax returns, can only be done twice in a year.
