What Do People Look for in a Model?
The world of fashion modeling can seem glamorous: you stand to make a fortune simply by posing for photographs or strutting on a runway. But in reality, models must meet certain qualifications to find work, before they get a shot at stardom.
-
Training
-
While you don't strictly need training or education in modeling and fashion to become a model, it can give your application an edge with a modeling agency. It also helps you learn the tricks of the trade in advance. Some aspiring models enroll in modeling schools, which offer training in posing, walking and applying makeup. Some also attend fashion school. Many models are also "discovered" at modeling schools when scouting agents come to call, so modeling school can lay the right foundation for a career in modeling.
Appearance
-
Successful models have more than just a pretty face. They must be photogenic, meaning that they photograph well: a more elusive and indefinable quality than simple beauty. Models should also have knowledge of hair styling, fashion and makeup. They need clear, blemish-free skin and healthy hair. Specific clients will have different requirements for the body proportions of their models. Models must fall within certain ranges for weight and height to find work with certain clients, but fashion designers tend to design their clothing for tall, thin models.

Other Qualifications
-
Models need to exhibit grace and confidence as well as professional, polite and accommodating demeanors. They need to get along with clients, photographers, and designers to find work. In addition, successful models may need to work hectic, stressful schedules and participate in photo shoots taken under a variety of conditions (sometimes uncomfortable ones). Modeling may also require frequent traveling, which can be exhausting. Models should possess patience and stamina to rise in the fashion world.
