What Are the File Extensions PS and MPEG?

A file extension indicates the file`s type.

All file types, from program installers to pictures and videos, have file extensions as well. One of the primary file types for video is MPEG, while documents may be formatted as PostScript PS files.

PS

The PS file type can contain vector graphics, text and raster images.Printers with a raster image processor can print PS files directly, without needing open them first. Adobe programs like Acrobat, Photoshop and Illustrator all support PS files.

.MPEG Extension

The Moving Picture Experts Group, or MPEG, standard extension is commonly used for video. MPEG utilizes either MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 compression to shrink audio and video compression for easier distribution. Many applications, including Apple Quicktime, Adobe Flash, Apple iTunes, Winamp and Windows Media Player, support MPEG files.

Uses

PostScript is still occasionally used, but the format has mainly been replaced by PDF documents, which have a neater appearance and additional options. MPEG files are widely used by computers and handheld video devices to play videos.
