Most use an automated system to streamline the process of creating item records and use these records to check items in and out. Automation systems also allow patrons to access an online catalog where they can search records online from home.

    Features

    • Library automation systems can have a variety of features beyond the ability to track items being checked in and out of the library. Commonly used systems allow patrons to search for items, check item availability and place holds on desired items.

    Considerations

    • Library automation has made great advancements over its history of more than 50 years. With the advent of digital music and eBook borrowing, libraries are again redefining how library automation systems can be used.
