What Is the Difference Between Hamsters and Mice?

Hamsters generally have smaller tails than mice.

Although mice and hamsters are small rodents with similar basic appearances, there are key behavioral and physical differences that distinguish them from each other.

Hamsters

Hamsters belong to the Cricetinae subfamily.

Hamsters have smaller tails than mice do, and some may not even have a tail. They are also slightly bigger than mice. Hamsters are very territorial and aren't considered social, which is why you won't find many sharing a cage. Hamsters are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals.

Mice

Mice belong to the Murinae subfamily.

Although mice are smaller and have shorter tails, they are smarter than hamsters. They also generally have more energy than hamsters and are more social when in a group. They are herbivores, meaning they eat only plants.

Similarities

In addition to physical similarities, both mice and hamsters tend to have poor eyesight; however, they both have great hearing. Both rodents have a life span of about two years.
