Kayak Certification
Although it is not necessary to have a kayak certification to grab a paddle and hop in the water, it is helpful to have one, particularly if you plan on teaching others how to kayak. Without one, you can risk injuring yourself, getting lost and other dangerous situations that can be avoided with the knowledge imparted in a training course.

You can obtain your kayaking certification through the American Canoe Association (ACA), which offers courses in teaching kayaking to others, as well as safety lessons and other related classes. This is the most widely known and respected association for those who are serious about obtaining a kayaking certification.

There is not just one type of kayaking certification you can obtain; there are several levels and skill types from which you must choose. For example, there are certifications in moving water, flat water and whitewater courses available in levels one through five of difficulty.

Sample Lesson

Most certification courses will ask you, the student, to prepare a short kayaking class with which to practice teaching on fellow classmates. This is generally a short lesson, under 10 minutes, and demonstrates to the teacher you understood the lessons and are able to lead a group of kayakers by yourself.
Continuining Education

Once you have completed the basic level of training, there are additional courses available by which to expand your knowledge and the skill sets that you are able to teach. These can include classes like open water coastal kayaking, as well as basic strokes and rescue.
