The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that employment of construction and building inspectors will grow by 17 percent from 2008 to 2018. This makes employment in the home inspection industry a worthwhile career focus.

Median annual wages of construction and building inspectors were $50,180 in 2008, according to the BLS. Inspectors working for the executive branch of government had the highest average annual earnings, at around $62,000.

In 2008, 44 percent all building inspectors in the U.S. were employed by local governments. Their average annual salary was $50,330. About 27 percent of all building instructors worked for architects and engineering firms; their average salary was $49,320.

Home inspector wages vary based on location. According to the BLS, building inspectors in the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clarita area of California earned an average salary of $82,290 in 2009. Home inspectors in Williamsport, Pennsylvania earned $44,610.
