VGA Vs. DVI Resolution

Computer equipment, both hardware and software, have changed significantly over the years. New technology continues to improve our digital experience. One of the developmental aspects of computer hardware are inputs.

  1. VGA

    • VGA was first introduced in 1987, and stands for video graphics array. It is one of the standard inputs used for PCs. It has two pixel ratings: the first for text, which is 720 by 400, and the second for graphics, which displays at 320 by 200 if you are using 256 colors. The total color palette for VGA is 262,144.

    DVI

    • DVI is short for digital video interface, and was created to convert analog signals, such as VGA, to digital signals. The technology's primary purpose is to allow the compatibility of both analog and digital monitors. Because of the large bandwidth capability of DVI, it can support higher resolution signals such for high-definition television.

    DVI Resolution vs. VGA Resolution

    • DVI acts more like a bridge between technologies, while VGA is limited in its display options. While the graphics and display properties of a VGA connection cannot be adjusted, with DVI you can either connect a VGA monitor to your DVI input or connect to an HDMI monitor using your DVI connector. This means that when bridging a VGA input, you will have a VGA quality display, but if you are bridging to an HDMI input, you could have high-definition resolution such as 720p or 1080p.
