Choosing a Cylinder
-
Any long, cylindrical object can serve as your pendant light's decorative shade as long as its diameter is slightly larger than the light bulb you plan to use. One end of the cylinder should be open, and the other end must be open or at least have a hole through which you can feed the light's wiring. Glass and metal are the most popular materials for pendant light shades, since a hot light bulb can mar plastic. According to the editors of ReadyMade, you can cut the bottom off of a glass water bottle using a bottle-cutter kit and feed the wiring through the top to make a quick and easy cylinder pendant light.
Other Components
-
A swag light wiring kit will include the wiring and the light socket for your cylinder pendant light. A ceiling fan cap that complements the cylinder's finish will cover the hole in the ceiling from which the wiring emerges.

Hanging Mechanism
-
Your cylinder pendant light can simply hang from the wiring, or you can conceal the wiring with a decorative metal pole.
