The purpose of Firefighter Training I certification is not only to ensure that firefighters can function effectively as an individual, but as a member of a fire department. Firefighter I certification provides the basic skills and knowledge for you to be a productive member of a fire department team.
Time Frame

To sit for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) examination for Firefighter I certification, you must have six months of full-time experience as a paid firefighter or 12 months experience as a volunteer firefighter.

Examination and Cost

The NFPA examination for Firefighter I certification consists of a written test and a practical exam. As of May 2008, the cost to sit for the examination is $75.
