Saunas promote relaxation and may lower stress levels.

The sauna, which involves high temperatures and steam heat, is a common feature in hotels and health clubs around the world. The advantages of a sauna appear to be its promoting a sense of relaxation and well-being. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Effects

    • The average person will lose a pint of sweat during a typical 20-minute session. The sauna's dry heat--as high as 185 degrees F--may help soothe sore muscles and joints. The high heat causes your heart rate to rise from about 100 to 160 beats per minute. Blood pressure may rise or fall, depending on the individual.

    Significance

    • The main advantage of a sauna is the relaxation and stress-release it provides. According to Dr. Harvey Simon, editor-in-chief of Harvard Men's Health Watch, there is little evidence of any other health benefits beyond that. In general, saunas are safe for the body.

    Cautions

    • If you are in poor health, have heart disease or if you have a history of high or low blood pressure, you should avoid using a sauna. Women who are pregnant should also stay away from the high temperatures, as it can have adverse effects.
