A change of environment can sometimes be distressing for a dog, causing tension and anxiety. If you are relocating, steps can be taken to make the transition an easier one for the dog and yourself. It's important to be aware of the signs of relocation anxiety in your dog and work through the issues before you move.

  1. Identification

    • When people move, they often experience a great deal of stress, which pets can sense. Dogs have close interaction with their owners and can perceive emotional stress due to a change such as relocation. This anxiety is very real and should be addressed for health reasons.

    Signs

    • Typical signs that your dog is experiencing relocation anxiety may be pacing, being destructive to get your attention, making messes indoors, howling, whining and whimpering.

    Treatment

    • If you are relocating to a new home, it's best to bring your dog to the new destination before you move in. Let the dog inspect the new surroundings and provide some treats and a new toy in the new home so the association will be a pleasurable one, making the transition easier.
