Comparison of Quilt Batting

Each quilt is a unique work of art.

Quilt batting is the inner layer of a quilt, sandwiched between the top patchwork layer and the backing layer. The batting helps to show off the quilting stitches as well as provides added warmth and stability to the quilt.

  1. Content

    • Quilt batting can be made with polyester, cotton or wool. Some quilters choose to use fleece or cotton flannel fabric as batting in their quilts.

    Thickness

    • Quilt batting comes in various thicknesses. For a quilt that will be washed frequently, use a sturdier batting that can stand up to washing. Quilts that have an intricate quilting design may be better made with a batting that will puff a little to show off the design.

    Price

    • Polyester batting often costs less than batting made with natural fibers. The thickness of the batting plays a role in the price as well. In 2010, quilt batting prices range from $1.99 to $14.99 per yard.
