Begonias are some popular garden annuals.

Flowers come in a range of sizes, colors and types. One very important categoryrefers to the flower's life span. The divisions of this category are perennial, biennial and annual. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Definition

    • The University of Illinois Extension states that an annual completes its full life cycle in one growing season. These plants receive spring plantings, grow to full bloom through the summer, and then die in fall, after the first frost. Plants that grow to full bloom in the first year are likely to be annuals.

    Types

    • Some of the more common types of annuals are begonias, butterfly flowers, cosmos, daisies, geraniums, impatiens, marigolds, morning glories, petunias and sunflowers.

    Region

    • According to the University of Illinois Extension, a flower's lifespan depends largely on the region. If a region doesn't offer hard frosts in the fall, flowers that are annuals in northern climates may live longer as perennials---flowers that come back several years in a row. Gardeners can also maintain their annuals by potting them in the winter and taking them indoors to avoid frost.
