Wave petunias are low growing petunia plants with compact flower blossoms. The plants reach 6 inches tall but spread up to 48 inches. Pinching back this variety of petunias is not a necessary step in maintaining wave petunias. Pinching back wave petunias is one method of controlling the growth of the flowers. If you plant the wave petunias in an area with limited space, remove the stems at the ends. This does not harm the wave petunia plant.
