How Much Sun for Azaleas and Rhododendrons?
Azaleas and rhododendrons prefer full to partial sun. This means that a planting site with over four hours of sun a day will provide enough sunlight in most circumstances for azaleas and rhododendrons to grow well. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Considerations
-
The climate must be factored in when determining if a site is suitable for an azalea or rhododendron bush. Plant your bushes in full sun in cold climates, but plant them in filtered shade in hot climates.
Significance
-
Azaleas withstand drier conditions and more sun exposure than rhododendrons. Deciduous azaleas and rhododendrons do better in full sun than the evergreen varieties.
-
Warning
-
Some varieties of azaleas and rhododendrons develop sun scald when exposed to too much sunlight. The leaves develop lighter colored centers near their large veins. This is not fatal, but makes the leaves look unsightly.
Solution
-
Move your azalea or rhododendron to an area with more shade if you notice that it suffers from sunburn. The other option is to set up a screen to provide afternoon shade for the azaleas and rhododendrons.
