What Is a High-Density Gymnastic Mat?
High-density gymnastic mats, also known as cross-linked polyethylene foam mats, are made of a common plastic and are suited for professional use. Polyethelene is the most common plastic in the world, and high-density polyethylene is the most rigid version of this plastic.

Features
-
Gymnastic mats allow athletes to perform moves that may otherwise cause injury. Gymnastic mats come in a variety of sizes and forms. High-density gymnastic mats are the most common mats used in professional and advanced gymnastics. The rigid material is well-suited for tumbling and provides enough softness to prevent injury.
Design
-
Folds allow the mat to be stored, conserving space. Cross-linked polyethylene foam provides the flexibility and rigidity necessary for gymnastics. Gymnastic mats consist of a 1 3/8-inch layer of cross-linked polyethylene with most versions having folds so the mat can be folded up and put away.

Cost
-
A 4-foot-by-8-foot cross-linked polyethylene mat typically costs between $100 and $150. A small practice floor may cost several hundred to a couple thousand dollars. A full-size gymnastic floor is 39 feet by 39 feet, which puts the cost at around $6,000.
