Information on GPS Navigational Systems

A global positioning system (GPS) works with satellites in calculating exact locations. They are used by consumers for location purposes, including driving directions to destinations.

  1. Process

    • Satellites in the sky circle around the earth twice a day transmitting signals to earth. These signals determine locations by comparing time and distance. A GPS receiver locks into these signals and calculates a latitude and longitude; which indicates exact locations. The GPS navigational system shows consumers precisely where they are.

    Basics

    • GPS navigational systems are purchased by consumers at many places and are inexpensive. Once purchased, they require no subscription fees or setup charges. They work in all weather conditions; however satellite signals are blocked by mountains and buildings.

    Purpose

    • Consumers purchase GPS navigational systems for travel reasons. A GPS system locates destinations and gives exact directions to the locations. They also are capable of locating gas stations, restaurants, and other businesses or addresses in whatever area is requested by the user. Any address is typed into the system, and the system then calculates how to get there.
