Standard Bed Sizes

Standard Bed Sizes thumbnail
Bed sizes vary in different countries.

Twin, full, king or queen, these common bed types have standard size guidelines in the United States. Familiar types of beds including futon, bunk beds, Murphy and trundle style beds also adhere to this standard bed size ratio. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Size

    • The American twin (or single) bed size is 39 inches wide by 75 inches long. The full (or double), is 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. Twin and double XL sizes increase the length of both beds by five inches. The queen-sized bed is 60 inches wide by x 80 inches long and a king-sized bed is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. A California king-sized bed has a standard size of 72 inches wide x 84 inches long.

    Types

    • Bunk beds are designed around the standard sizes of the twin and the full. The top tier of a futon bunk bed and a loft bed will often use the twin. When the futon is changed from the sofa into the bed position, it commonly uses the full standard size. Standard sized mattresses (based on standard bed sizes) are used in the trundle and space-saving beds and Murphy (or pull-down beds) beds also base their designs around these specifications.

    Significance

    • Bed or mattress manufacturers, decorators, designers and those who work in a profession where the predetermined size of the bed affects what they are doing need to take these considerations into account.
