Guidelines for a Good Resume

Employers and schools may have to read through hundreds of applications at a time. Catch their eye with a professional approach and quality resume content to ensure a successful application.

  1. Content

    • Every resume should include your name and contact details, a summary of your education and qualifications and a summary of your work and volunteer experience. A resume stands out if the content reflects the position you're applying for, so include anything directly relevant to the job or college course. Briefly explain the skills you used and learned through each experience.

    Personal Statement

    • Add a personal statement to make your resume stand out above the rest. Make it no more than a paragraph or two. Describe your personal values, your goals and how you think your presence will benefit the company, workplace or institution. Make it specific -- not "I have good communication skills," but "My ability to explain technical concepts in a simple way will help customers at the Springfield PC store."

    Practical Considerations

    • Make your resume stand out by printing it in a readable font such as size 12 Times New Roman or Arial, on good quality white or lightly colored paper, with sections clearly marked by bold or underlined headings. Leave lines between paragraphs and a margin of at least one-quarter inch on either side.
