If you've got a large household, are a hunter with a lot of meat to store or homeowner who likes to stock up on frozen bargains, a chest freezer comes in handy. A handful of companies make these appliances, including Frigidaire and Whirpool.

Sizes

Manufacturers use cubic feet to describe how much frozen food a chest freezer can hold. If you only have room for a small freezer, Frigidaire offers models holding less than 10 cubic feet. Frigidaire also offers the largest chest freezer available between the two manufacturers, a 25-cubic-foot model.

Features

The storage baskets in Whirlpool freezers are made of plastic, while those in Frigidaire chest freezers are constructed with wire. Whirpool offers up to three baskets, while Frigidaire provides as many as four. Some Whirpool models include an alarm that alerts you if the temperature rises too high.

Price

At 5 cubic feet, the smallest Frigidaire sold by a major retailer in October 2010 carried a price tag of $180. Both manufacturers had a 14.8-cubic-foot chest freezer selling for $449. The largest Frigidaire had a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $850.
