Alluminum Jon Boats

Aluminum boats are hard to paint. A lot of preparation is involved, the paint does not adhere well to the slick surface. You need to prime the surface so there are no contaminates; an acid etch wash primer for aluminum should work. Then, spray on an epoxy primer and use a two-component polyurethane top coat paint.

Wooden Jon Boats

If you wish to stain the boat don't use an oil-based product, make sure it's alcohol or water-based, and allow it to dry before applying any finish. Paints that work well on a wooden jon boat are 100 percent acrylic exterior latex water based paint. You can find them at any paint supply store.
