Salaries ranged from $16,060 or less for the bottom 10 percent of earners to more than $39,240 for the highest-paid 10 percent.

    Museum Tour Guides

    • Tour guides employed at museums, historical sites and similar institutions in the United States made an average of $11.50 per hour or $23,920 yearly in May, 2009, BLS figures show. Salaries ranged from $15,630 or less for the lowest-paid 10th of museum tour guides to $36,410 and up for the best-paid 10 percent.

    Employment

    • Museums, historical sites and similar institutions made up the largest industry in terms of employment of tour guides and escorts in May, 2009, the BLS reports. There were 11,670 tour guides and escorts employed in such places out of 31,360 for all industries combined. In the Chicago-Naperville-Joliet area, there were 1,080 people working as tour guides and escorts in May, 2009, according to the BLS.
