Do Handheld GPS Systems Work While Driving?

Do Handheld GPS Systems Work While Driving? thumbnail
A hand-held GPS receiver is an all-around navigational tool.

Hand-held GPS receivers are, at the core, just a portable and self-contained version of their larger automotive-mount counterparts. They will work whether you are driving in a car or out on foot. The primary differences in a car unit are a bigger screen and a mount bracket.

  1. Early GPS Receivers

    • In the beginning, all civilian GPS receivers were hand-held. But they nevertheless included features such as a speed readout, to make them more practical for use while driving.

    Basic Hand-Held Receivers

    • The least expensive GPS receivers currently available are very similar in features to the original units. Like the originals, they don't have maps built in, but they do keep track of speed, distance traveled and waypoints marked.

    Full-Featured Hand-Held Receivers

    • The higher-priced hand-held receivers include all the features of the inexpensive models, and add mapping software and sometimes a memory card slot. They are not as convenient to use while driving as the automotive-mount versions, but they will perform the same functions.
