Garden Edging with Plants
-
Using plants to edge a flower bed instead of more traditional edging material allows gardeners to create a living, organic border. Choose a plant that is ideal for the climate as well as soil and light conditions. Many border plants are somewhat shaded by the other plants in the flower bed.
Types of Plants
-
Perennial and annual plants, the two most common types of plants. Perennial plants grow through many seasons, while annual plants must be replanted year after year. Some recommended edging plants include ornamental grasses, ivy and sedum, according to the Virginia Tech University. These plants have a tendency to look beautiful through all seasons. Also consider flowering plants, but keep in mind most only flower in the spring or summer.

Warnings

Carefully read the labels when purchasing ground cover plants, recommends the Virginia Tech University. Ensure the plant is suited to the growing conditions and avoid plants marked as vigorous. Many times these plants, such as ivy, are invasive and can take over a flower bed.
