Homemade Weight Racks
Imagination, creativity and smart planning go a long way when building your own weight rack. For inspiration, go to your local gym and check out the different types of weight racks there.

Function
-
Weight racks store and organize your weights when not in use. Typical weights include dumbells, barbells and weight plates. Before you build your weight rack, consider the type of weights and how heavy they are. Pick a shelf-style rack model for heavy dumbells, and use sturdy material such as iron or steel. Wood, while not as sturdy, is easier to handle. Use steel pipes for weight plates.
Space Savers
-
Exercisers using light to medium-sized weights, who also want to save space, can use thick, vertical planks with hooks to store dumbells. Acquire two planks of equal size and lean them together into a very narrow A-shape. Imagine a high triangle shape without the bottom part, a tower. Ensure that the top of the triangle tower is kept firmly together by driving nails through both planks. Create rows for each dumbell by attaching two or more hooks next to each other to simulate cradles on either side of tower. Hardware stores offer several dozen different-sized hooks. Some you can screw right into the plank. Use three or four hooks to support heavier weights.

Considerations
-
No matter what material you use to build your weight rack, ensure that your final product is sturdy. Wiggle it a bit to see if it feels solid. Take the wiggle test one step further and put some weights in the shelves or on the hooks. Don't worry if your weight rack feels somewhat unsteady. Just add a few more nails or even supporting pieces of wood here and there.
