How Does a Plasma Torch Work?

A plasma torch creates such great heat that it converts air into plasma. Plasma torches have revolutionized metalworking, allowing faster and smoother cuts than could be obtained with previous tools.

  1. Plasma Theory

    • Applying intense heat to gas creates plasma, a fourth state of matter. Plasma torches are based upon this principle, using an electrical arc to heat the surrounding atmosphere.

    Plasma Torch Components

    • The four main components of a plasma torch are an electrical power supply, a cable to transmit the electricity, an electrode to conduct electrical heat and a nozzle to release some of the heat. The plasma is released in a thin stream that can quickly and smoothly cut through metal.

    Plasma Torch Risks

    • The amount of voltage required to create plasma is lethal to humans. The housing of a plasma torch must be insulated and grounded to minimize the risk of accidental shock; even then, the device should be used with caution.
