Identification
-
The Aster Crego is a popular cut flower. Aster Crego is one variety of Chinese aster that is often used as a cut flower because of its long stems and bright blooms. The flowers come in a variety of colors, from purples to pinks to white, and they bloom from late summer into fall. The flower heads are sometimes confused with chrysanthemums because of their full, round shape and large size.
Size

Crego asters generally grow to be between 2 and 3 feet tall, but can get even taller when fertilized, pruned and staked. To maximize the height and number of blooms on an Aster Crego plant, fertilize it monthly. The stems may also need to be pruned so that only 8 to 10 shoots grow from each plant. Each of those shoots should be tied to a garden stake to ensure it does not break in strong winds. This extra step will ensure tall growth and large, profuse blooming.

Considerations
-
The Aster Crego prefers a sunny to partly shady location in a spot protected from strong winds. Seeds should be sown 1/4-inch deep in early spring, after all danger of frost has passed. Plants should be spaced 8 to 12 inches apart. Aster Crego will grow well in containers if they are well watered and fertilized.
