Helicopter Safety Training

Helicopter pilots must be highly aware of ground obstructions and power cables.

As with any type of professional or recreational aviation, flying a helicopter brings risks. Many programs and instructors are available to train new pilots in safety procedures and techniques.

  1. Helicopter Safety Issues

    • A helicopter offers distinct safety-related challenges to its pilot. A helicopter's smaller size makes it much easier to overburden with cargo and endanger the pilot and passengers. Helicopters may also fly at lower altitudes, putting them at risk to hit ground obstructions, trees and power cables.

    Types

    • As with training for a pilot's license, many aviation schools offer training to aspiring helicopter pilots. They will often offer both professional and recreational courses or programs. These programs are the best way to earn certification as a pilot and gain time inspecting a helicopter for safety issues while under learned guidance.

    Considerations

    • One of the safest ways to learn to fly a helicopter is to really get to know each type of aircraft well. Some pilots call this training period "time in type." New pilots should consider keeping an instructor on board for the maximum allowable hours when learning a new aircraft.
