Common sound problems can often be fixed by simple troubleshooting steps.

Configuring hardware can be difficult in Microsoft Windows Vista. Ideally, the hardware, such as a sound card, will work as soon as the computer is turned on. Sometimes troubleshooting is necessary to remedy problems.

  1. Ensure a Sound Card is Present

    • Sound may not be present because of a missing a sound card, whether integrated on the motherboard or separately plugged in. To check, click on "Start" followed by "Control Panel." Locate "System Maintenance" and find "Device Manager." Under "Sound, video, and game controllers" check to see if a sound device is listed. If one isn't found, you'll need to purchase a sound card.

    Update the Driver

    • An outdated driver may cause sound not to work as well. If you have an active Internet connection, go to "Sound, video, and game controllers," then right-click on the sound card and select "Update driver." Windows Update will search to see if there are any updated or compatible drivers. This is especially important if Windows Vista was upgraded from a previous version.

    Check Cables

    • The simplest solution often gets overlooked. Check the cables to make certain the speakers or headphones are plugged into the correct port. Also, make sure the speakers are plugged into an outlet for power and turned on.
