-
Windows CE 5.0, codenamed "Macallan," is the third released edition of the Windows CE .Net family of operating systems. Windows CE 5.0 was first released in July, 2004, and succeeded Windows CE 4.2. Windows CE 5.0 was designed to run on such embedded system processors as the Intel x86.
Features
-
Windows CE 5.0 runs on under a megabyte of memory, and uses threads, or the smallest unit of processing that can be executed by an operating system. These threads improve execution time, or the time it takes for the computer system to perform a task. Windows CE 5.0 is supported by Microsoft Visual Studio, a software development program and Basic4ppc, a programming language.

Shared Source
-
Windows CE 5.0 belongs to the Microsoft shared source initiative, meaning that individuals are allowed to modify the system code of products in the initiative. Developers can modify Windows CE 5.0 applications in order to customize the system to their needs, without the need to share or disclose those changes to Microsoft.
