How Much Should One Tip on Home Delivery Items?
With most forms of etiquette, there are no clear-cut rules that dictate how to act. The same is true with tipping. Unlike at a restaurant, where the standard 15 percent or 20 percent is accepted, tipping for home deliveries can be tricky, especially when you consider there are many different types of deliveries.

Officially, the United States Postal Service is not allowed to receive tips because it may violate federal laws; however, gifts can be given in place of a cash tip. Coffee mugs, flowers, chocolates or any other snack that is not considered part of a meal can accepted by mail carriers, as long as the gift does not exceed $20 in value.
Food Delivery

When ordering from a restaurant, the tip is customarily 15 percent to 20 percent, but should never be under $2. This is especially true for pizza deliveries; keep in mind the driver usually has to pay for his own gas. It is considered poor etiquette not to give a tip.

Other Deliveries

The local paper boy should only be tipped during the Christmas holiday season. This is when a year-long tip should be given; the norm is $20 or a small gift.
When receiving pharmaceuticals, a tip is not expected, but if you insist on tipping, $2 will suffice. The same is true for grocery deliveries.
For UPS or Federal Express deliveries, a regular tip is not expected; however, a small yearly tip of up to $15, around the Christmas holiday, should be given to UPS delivery people. Fed Ex employees are not allowed to accept tips, but a small gift of up to $25 in value can be given, once again, during the Christmas holiday.
