Speed Typing Tutorial

Speed typists reach 100 words per minute or more.

Are you a hunt-and-peck typist who bangs out letters with your index fingers? You probably type 20 to 30 words per minute (wpm). Now, imagine typing 100 wpm. Your hands would fly over the keyboard like superman. But that's not unusual for a speed typist.

  1. Home Row

    • The key to speed typing is the home row. This is where you always place your hands when typing. With practice, you will remember the position of every key in relation to where your hands are on the home row. This is called "touch typing" because you use touch instead of sight to find the right keys.

    Begin

    • Most keyboards have a raised dot on the J and F keys to keep you oriented to the home row. Put your right hand fingers on the letters J, K, L and semicolon (;) keys and left hand fingers on A, S, D and F keys. You should look like a pianist ready to play a concerto.

    Practice, Practice, Practice

    • Memorize the position of every key on your keyboard. Then practice typing from a written page without looking at the keyboard, always keeping your hands on the home row, until the location of each key is imprinted in your memory.
