Teen Driving Problems

Teenagers must recognize that their lives are not the only ones at stake when they're driving a car.

Car accidents are a major cause of death among young people. Teenagers who are just learning how to drive may be particularly at risk. Peer pressure and lack of attention cause many accidents. By knowing the problems often associated with teen driving, you can work with your teen to drive safely.

Speeding

Excessive speed is a common problem among teenage drivers. Speeding reduces the time available to respond to traffic hazards and makes it more likely that the driver will lose control of the vehicle or crash into an object or another car.

Substance Abuse

Teens need time to adjust to driving a car on public roads. The learning curve is severely affected if the teen is using drugs or alcohol. Driving is difficult for beginning motorists, and substance abuse by drivers often leads to accidents.

Inability to Recognize Hazards

Many teenagers feel invincible and rebel against societal norms. Refusing to wear a seat belt, driving too fast for the weather conditions and simply driving recklessly lead to many accidents among teens.
